THE BOOK DRIVE CAMPAIGN
Target – ₦5,460,000
In August 2011, we partnered with a Community-Based Organization in the slums of Ajegunle in Lagos State to teach soft skills to about 150 youth like Sarah, and Isaac, who were eager to learn but lacked the resources to access skill-development books. This project made us realize that there was a dearth or famine of books in Nigeria and it was a myth that young people did like to read, the problem was they did not have access to books.
According to the World Literacy Foundation; as a result of ‘the book famine’ “9 out of 10 children in public/community schools in Africa cannot read.” In response to this challenge, KIR Foundation initiated the Book Drive Campaign project to provide access to books to underserved children, inmates and public schools. 14 years later, we have put 50,238 books in the hands of our beneficiaries in public/community primary schools, Orphanage Homes and Correctional Centres and read to over 45,371 children in the 36 States of Nigeria and the capital Abuja, Nigeria and Ghana who do not have access to books.
12 Reading Corners in 12 underserved communities in Nigeria
MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF THE READING CORNERS
Target – ₦3,970,000
The 2016 Global Education Monitoring Report recognises the ability to read as a key driver for sustainable development and a major enabler for all to contribute to societal, economic, and personal change. These discoveries reinforce the case for the work that KIR Foundation has been involved in for over a decade: putting books in the hands of those who want to read but do not have access to books. Since 2021, from February to November, every Friday, KIR ‘s Volunteers go to the 12 Public Primary Schools in Port Harcourt where we have set up Reading Corners to read to and with the children and gift them personal storybooks to improve their literacy and soft skills. Also, every Friday, we gift at least pupils with personal storybooks to inspire them to develop a reading reading culture. We need your support to gift these underserved children their personal storybooks!
DIGITAL HUB
The digital divide is the gap between those who have access to information and communication technologies (ICT) and those who do not. Therefore bridging the digital divide and enhancing the digital skills of youth in Nigeria are crucial for their development and empowerment. Thus, to achieve this, there is a need for a multi-stakeholder and collaborative approach that involves the government, the private sector, the youth themselves and civil society organisations like KIR Foundation in initiating and implementing community projects such as KIR Foundation Digital Hub. Every Monday and Wednesday from Febuary to November, the KIR Foundation Inclusive Resource Centre opens its doors to young people like 16-year-old Confidence in the Amadi-Ama community where our office is located who want to acquire digital skills for free
Support us to bridge the digital divide.
