KIR FOUNDATION DISABILITY INCLUSION TRACK RECORD

  • Adopted the Special School for Handicapped Children in 2012
  • Commenced Prize Giving and Book Donation Day in the Special School for Handicapped Children and hosted it for 5 years, donating numerous educational resources to over 1,000 students and their teachers.
  • Conducted vocational training in different skills,from 2013 to 2016 and trained over 150 students. We held after-school preparatory classes for students from 2013 to 2014 and coached over 35 students.
  • Represented Nigeria with the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities at the UN High-Level Meeting on Disability in New York in September 2013.
  • We introduced disability inclusion to TEDx Port-Harcourt and The Great Teacher Award in 2014.
  • Through our advocacy efforts Crystal Vine Community Church, Port- Harcourt became disability inclusive in 2014.
  • Through our advocacy efforts in May 2013, by mainstreaming disability inclusion at the State level, Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, based on our recommendation, increased the number of Special Needs teachers in the Special School for Handicapped Children in 2014.
  • From 2015 – 2016, we renovated the Corpers Lodge, the Dining Hall, and one of the classrooms, installed 5 ceiling fans in the Assembly Hall, and donated 2 bunk beds to the Special School for Handicapped Children.
  • Set up an ICT Resource room in the Special School for Handicapped Children in 2017.
  • We have employed persons with disabilities in our Disability Inclusive Centre like Maria Okese; the First Miss Deaf Nigeria, who was our First In-house Photographer.
  • We provide a conducive environment for persons with disabilities to do apprenticeships with our trainers and set up small businesses.
  • We have been running disability-inclusive training in our Centre since 2014.
  • We have donated numerous educational materials to organizations/schools that are disability-inclusive or work with persons with disabilities; TLEC Educational Centre, Christy Toby Inclusive School, Anglo Saxon Centre for the Blind, Handmaids Nursery and Primary School for the Sighted and Blind, Special School for the Deaf, Otana Inclusive Centre and set up a Reading Corner in Therapeutic Nursery and Primary School Enugu.
  • Our advocacy has encouraged organizations like Cinfores Limited, PIND Foundation, and the Rivers State ICT Centre to become more disability inclusive.
  • From 2018 to 2020 in partnership with PIND Foundation, we trained over 60 youth with disabilities in ICT-related and soft skills during the Niger Delta Youth Employment Pathways Project.
  • We hosted Dinner in the Dark, a disability-inclusive event that encourages empathy for persons with disabilities, especially the blind in 2019.
  • We have been distributing advocacy materials such as stickers, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018 to create awareness about disability rights.
  • In 2020 we marked the IDPWD with a workshop and gave 15 PWDs equipment to scale their businesses.
  • In 2021 we marked the IDPWD with a workshop and gave 12 PWDs equipment to scale their businesses.
  • In 2022 we supported 50 students with disabilities at Ignatius Ajuru University with educational supplies and assistive devices and trained 10 youth with disabilities in digital skills.
