SCHOLARSHIP ALERT!
Education is a powerful tool that can transform lives and communities. However, for Nigerians, access to quality education has become a significant financial challenge! Therefore, in this blog, we have put together a list of national and international scholarship opportunities that can assist in the pursuit of your academic dreams.
A scholarship is a grant or payment made to support a student’s education. It is awarded based on academic or other achievement. A scholarship is financial support granted to a student, based on academic achievement or other criteria that may include financial need, for schooling.
Scholarships are gifts that do not need to be repaid. There are numerous scholarships offered by schools, employers, individuals, private companies, nonprofits, communities, religious groups, and professional and social organizations. In this article, we have put together some sites where you can access some scholarship opportunities.
What kinds of scholarships are available?
Merit-based – These are earned by meeting or exceeding certain standards set by the scholarship-giver. Merit scholarships might be awarded based on academic achievement or on a combination of academics and a special talent, trait, or interest.
Financial need – These are given to indigent students and are sometimes not based on merit.
Groups/Demographic-based – These are usually focused on a specific group of people, for instance, there are scholarships for women or graduate students. Some are available because of where you or your parents work, or because you come from a certain background (for instance, there are “scholarships for military families).
A scholarship might cover the entire cost of your tuition, or it might be a one-time award. They are worth applying for because they reduce the cost of your education and sometimes incidental costs like accommodation.
WHEN DO I APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS?
This depends on each scholarship’s deadline. However, you must start researching or searching for scholarships at least a year or six months before you plan to apply for them.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS?
Each scholarship has its requirements and the website will give you an idea of who qualifies for the scholarship and how to apply. Always, make sure you read the application carefully, fill it out completely, and meet the application deadline.
HOW DO I GET MY SCHOLARSHIP MONEY?
This depends on the scholarship. The money might go directly to your university, where it will be applied to any tuition, fees, or other amounts you require. Then any leftover funds might be given to you or they might be sent directly to your account and paid as stipulated in the terms of the scholarship. The scholarship provider will tell you what to expect when you are informed that you have been awarded the scholarship, otherwise, make sure to ask.
