Call for Volunteers

Volunteers make a huge difference in the world, and for Keeping It Real (KIR) Foundation; volunteers are at the heart of what we do! Join our remarkable volunteer Reading Ambassador, Mclarry Ebere, to volunteer as a Reading Ambassador with KIR Foundation in Public Primary Schools and underserved communities in Rivers State by helping children like #Ine and her friends in Success Model Primary School in the slums of Port-Harcourt learn how to #Read.

Are you passionate about helping children learn to read? Do you have a few hours every Friday to spare? If so, consider volunteering as a Reading Ambassador with KIR Foundation. Why? According to UNICEF 75% of children in public primary schools cannot read or write a simple sentence (Punch Newspaper, January 2023).

A study, conducted by Researchers Colin Macleod and Noah Forrin at the University of Waterloo and published in the journal Memory in October 2017, found that reading words aloud to children makes it easier for them to remember compared to reading to them silently.

KIR Foundation as a non-profit organization works to improve the quality of education for children by providing learning resources to empower the educationally vulnerable in Nigeria. We inspire a love for learning in the children we serve to enable them to realize their full potential, achieve their dreams, and thrive in an ever-changing world. One of the major ways we do this is by setting up Reading Corners in public schools and underserved communities. So far, we have set up 75 Reading Corners in the 36 States of Nigeria and Abuja the Capital.

Since 2021, through our comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation Programme; our Reading Ambassadors have been going to the schools where we have set up Reading Corners to read to the children so that they can learn how to read. The landmark Becoming a Nation of Readers Report from 1985 concluded that “the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children”.
